Types of Termites
Different types of termites require different treatment strategies.
It is important to understand the exact species of termites that you have as it will affect a lot the kind of strategy that you will apply against the infestation. There are at least 1,300 species of termites ranging in size, place of habitation and feeding habits. You will find just 30-40 of them in the USA but even these are too many to apply a uniform treatment. All termites can be approximately classified into three major types:
- Subterranean termites – the most wide spread kind of termites in the USA responsible for 95% of damage;
- Drywood termites – generally found in Texas and Calirornia;
- Dampwood termites – nest in rotting wood and can infest coastal cabins and houses.
